Temperate fruits are valued for their attractiveness, taste, nutritional quality, and as a source of earning foreign exchange. Cultivation of temperate fruits is the mainstay of the economy of the hill farmers of the country, though their national productivity is far below the international level. One of the major factors behind the low productivity is use of low productivity cultivars, lack of quality planting materials, poor adoption of improved technologies of cultivation such as provision for adequate pollination, high density planting, insufficient infrastructure for input supply, different biotic and abiotic stresses like drought, low snow fall, insect-pests, diseases, etc. The book provides a sound knowledge on temperate fruit cultivation so as to achieve the goal of higher productivity with superior quality, particularly in a changing and challenging environment. This book has been planned keeping in view the challenges faced by the temperate fruit industry, and as per the syllabus approved by ICAR for undergraduate students.
