This edition of Mineralogy: Concepts, Descriptions, Determinations is a major revision of the first edition. This edition is intended primarily to serve as a textbook for a first course in mineralogy. In addition, it should also serve as a useful reference for geologists, petrologists, pedologists, solid-state physicists, and others who use crystallography or mineralogy as a keystone for their professional deliberations. A fundamental assumption underlying the treatment of mineralogy in this book is that a basic knowledge of minerals provides a key to the interpretation of, for example, geological environments and processes. Consequently, descriptions of both data and investigative procedures are included to acquaint students with the kinds of information that can be obtained from the study and investigation of minerals. Some of the procedures are mentioned only in passing to give beginning students an idea of the range of data that can be determined; other procedures are described in more detail to help prepare students for advanced courses.
