Functional Chordate Anatomy was prepared for college-level courses in chordate or vertebrate anatomy and morphology. It especially addresses the training needs of advanced undergraduates with majors in zoology biology or biomedicine; it should also be useful as a reference. The text emphasizes facts and ideas about body structure how the body works and why it is constructed as it is. Readers should begin with a basic understanding of general biology. The book hopes to stimulate interest in one of todays most exciting and dynamic areas of anatomical research: the relationship of structure to form function and adaptation. That approach is followed for each organ system not just for the muscles and skeleton. It also considers evolution basic embryonic development and phylogeny and introduces some of the anatomical correlates of behavior with a survey of chordates and an overview of anatomy as a discipline. Function is structure in action and is the reason for the existence of structure. Now more than ever anatomists analyze functions of body structures and relate them to adaptation.
